Senator Cynthia López Castro, representative of Mexico City, resigned from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) due to disagreements with its national leader, Alejandro Moreno. In a video posted on social media, López Castro explained that her resignation is due to differences with Moreno, claiming that she does not feel heard or supported in the party after 21 years of membership.
The legislator decided not to participate in a recent session where the constitutional supremacy reform was voted on and approved, citing health issues. Although her vote would not have changed the final outcome of the voting, López Castro expressed her clear opposition to the reform and stated that she would have voted with the opposition had she been present.
Following her absence from the session, the senator reported receiving attacks from within the PRI and rejected accusations of alleged negotiations with Morena and the coordinator of that party, Adán Augusto López. In a press conference, López Castro stated that her resignation is solely to separate from the PRI and that she has no plans to join Morena.
López Castro reaffirmed her commitment to her electorate, assuring that she will continue working in favor of her country and her city with the same principles. She explained that her resignation is based on the impossibility of progressing within the PRI due to differences with its leadership, reiterating her stance for equality, solidarity, and justice.
